The Emmys come only but once a year. And this year's looks to be more diverse than ever, comedy wise that is. The usual suspects like Veep are there but then newcomers like Samantha Bee and Pamela Aldon join the fun. The Emmys air on Sunday, September 17th at 8 PM. Stephen Colbert will host so we know who's not winning his award...(jk I don't know).
Gillian Jacobs, Vanessa Bayer & Phoebe Robinson join the Netflix comedy "Ibiza"
Ensemble pics are all the rage and I'll be darned if I'm not a sucker for them. The latest movie to use this casting tactic is Ibiza, one of those Netflix originals. Deadline reports Gillian Jacobs, Vanessa Bayer and Phoebe Robinson have all joined the movie. Alex Richanbach will direct a script by Lauryn Kahn.
The women will star as a trio traveling to Barcelona and Ibiza for Jacobs's character's work. They then begin to hunt for a popular DJ in the city.
The script comes from Kahn, who'd been optioning it since 2014 at Sony. Gary Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick produce alongside Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane, Joe Drake, and Erin Westerman. Ibiza will begin shooting in August.
The Brooklyn Comedy Festival returns with full sound, color
Creating a trailer and using a hit song from the Alabama Shakes is a risky move for a comedy festival to make. But the hipsters who put together the Brooklyn Comedy Festival don't care what you think; they only want you to come and laugh at all the comedians. And what a list they have (many of whom we've spoken to). Not only are big names like Vanessa Bayer, Sasheer Zamata, Phoebe Robinson and Josh Gondelman performing but they'll be joined by Julio Torres, Nimesh Patel, Brett Davis, MURDERFIST, Reformed Whores, Myq Kaplan, Sean Donnelly, Joel Kim Booster, Michelle Buteau, Dan Soder, Hari Kondabolu, Joe List, Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, Joe Pera, and Langston Kerman. And Reggie Watts is closing out the whole thing with a performance at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. The Brooklyn Comedy Festival goes from August 22nd to the 28th. Shows will be free or paid but you can always spring for the relatively affordable $99 VIP pass that will get you in everywhere except for a corporate job. Enjoy the festival and ride off in the sunset with your penny-farthing bikes, you bearded bastards.
Jenny Slate, Jack Black to star in a polka movie while Zoe Lister-Jones, Adam Pally and Fred Armisen rock out
Indie movies are a sure fire way to get niche projects done. Better yet, they can come out exactly the way the creator wanted it to. They're getting made all the time while these other AAA blockbusters soak up all the sun. But the appeal of an indie movie is that Hollywood's top brass get a chance to shine in a more subdued, folk heavy environment.
Jenny Slate and Jack Black are starring together in The Polka King. Variety scooped the story saying that the Black produced movie is based on the 2009 documentary The Man Who Would be Polka King. The movie will follow Pennsylvania polka sensation Jan Lewan who got his fans to invest in a Ponzi scheme. Maya Forbes and Wolodarsky wrote and directed the script. The cast also includes Jason Schwartzman, Jacki Weaver, Vanessa Bayer, and J.B Smoove.
On a more personal front, Zoe Lister-Jones recently finished what Hollywood Reporter is calling her passion project. She did everything from writing to directing and even producing. Oh and she starred in it too. And she wrote the songs? Jeez, calm down girl. The movie is called Band Aid and also stars Adam Pally and Fred Armisen. The story follows a couple on the brink of divorce after a miscarriage but they decide to turn their fights into rock songs, forming a rock band to save the marriage. Casting includes a ton of comedy and television favorites like Hannah Simone, Brookyln Decker, Chris D'Elia, Jesse Williams, Susie Essman, Ravi Patel, Erinn Hayes, Jamie Chung, Jerry O'Connell, Retta, Majandra Delfino, and Angelique Cabral. Wow, Lister-Jones sure did stack this cast.
Amy Schumer doesn't remember Vanessa Bayer in these SNL promos
Amy Schumer is continuing her rising star train this weekend as she prepares for a stint on Saturday Night Live. The comedienne performs the mandatory promos with her Trainwreck co-star Vanessa Bayer. Or was Bayer really in that movie? I think so. I don't remember and neither does Schumer.
