Fans of Key and Peele and How I Met Your Mother are in for a treat as one star from each respective series will star, together, in a new Netflix series. Keegan-Michael Key and Colbie Smulders will take on Friends From College, which comes from power couple Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco. Annie Parisse, Nat Faxon, Fred Savage and Jae Suh Park round out the cast. The story has the group of friends (all of whom graduated from Harvard) meeting up in their 40's. Of course they all have different degrees of success. Stoller and Delbanco will write and executive produce the eight episodes while Stoller will direct.
Netflix thinks Chuck Lorre and Kathy Bates' weed comedy won't go up in smoke
I have to hand it to Netflix. They've created an empire from the humble beginnings of selling DVDs. They have some of the best shows on television. And they're business sense is impeccable. But sometimes, actually more recently, they've been pulling some dumbass moves. The Ranch, Kong: King of the Apes, and Jessica Jones are just a few of the blemishes on their otherwise flawless record. Now, a Chuck Lorre series is probably joining those ranks. It's a pot dispensary series called Disjointed and already has a 20 episode order. The Hollywood Reporter says Kathy Bates is set to star. Disjointed (sigh...) is written by Lorre and The Daily Show and Late Late Show writer David Javerbaum.
The multicamera comedy has Bates "as a lifelong advocate for marijuana legalization who’s finally living her dream as the owner of a Los Angeles-area cannabis dispensary. Joining her are three 'budtenders,' her twentysomething son and a deeply troubled security guard. All of them are more or less constantly high." Disjointed (ugh...) joins other pot comedies High Maintenance, which moved from Vimeo to HBO -- Amazon's Margaret Cho led Highland (I get it) and an NBC show from Adam and Naomi Scott named Buds. All of these shows will eventually be followed by a show called Weeds and...nevermind that's already a thing.
Hey, Al Brooks fans, a bunch of Al Brooks movies are coming to Netflix
Who doesn’t love the comedy stylings of the great Albert Brooks? He’s a beloved figure in the “haha” scene with dozens of credits to his name. Who am I kidding? You love ol’ Al Brooks too! Now, fans both young and old, can enjoy four of his classic films on Netflix. You have Netflix, you love Al Brooks...win win! The comedian addressed the announcement today with a funny ad for the streaming service. Real Life (1979), Modern Romance (1981), Lost in America (1985), Defending Your Life (1991), Mother (1996), The Muse (1999), and Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (2005) will be joining the ranks of instant play. All of these movies land on Netflix this Friday, July 1.
Ricky Gervais’ David Brent movie is coming to a Netflix near you
Those of you who like Ricky Gervais and his brand of God-hating comedy will revel in the news that his character from The Office U.K. will be back in his own movie. David Brent will be so David Brent in David Brent: Life on the Road. The movie will also be in the same mockumentary style as the original The Office. Netflix is set to accept its umpteenth Gervais feature following the Derek series, that Special Correspondents thing and probably some other stuff. The Wrap reported the news via the Opie Show on which Gervais said “This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now: Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again, which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it’s great.” The movie has been in the works for some time. Last summer, the movie was said to head to U.K. theaters this August. Check out the teaser for the movie below.
Nick Kroll will have his very own cartoon series on Netflix
The Netflix train continues to roll as they add another big time comedian with a show to their bulbous slate of comedian based shows. The streaming platform has greenlit Big Mouth from Kroll Show's title character/creator Nick Kroll. Variety says the show will be a 30 minute "edgy, surreal animated comedy," which describes most of what Kroll usually does. It follows teenagers, Nick and Andrew (Kroll's irl bff and Family Guy writer/producer Andrew Goldberg) who are on the cusp of puberty. John Mulaney is said to actually voice the character of Andrew however. Of course, other comedians are joining the voice cast including Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate and Jessi Klein. Big Mouth will scream its first ten episodes on Netflix in 2017.
