Def Comedy Jam's 25th anniversary will be remembered on Netflix (not HBO)

Anniversarys are the hit thing to remember, especially the ones that end in multiples of five. Soon, one of the most influential comedy shows will be brought back into the light. Def Comedy Jam will be celebrating 25 years with a new special on Netflix of all places. 

The once HBO series will have a Netflix special called Def Comedy Jam 25 comes this fall. Featured comics include Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, D.L. Highley, Cedric the Entertainer, JB Smoove, Tiffany Haddish, and Tracy Morgan among others. 25 will "[celebrate] the impact and legacy of the long-running comedy series with surprise guests, tributes and performances in a can’t-miss evening of unbelievably funny and raw moments." This comes after HBO ordered the All Def Comedy Series from Russell Simmons which is set to be taped September 7th at Avalon Theater in Los Angeles. That special is coming in December.

"Popstar" won Best Picture (at some other awards show)

While the Oscars haven't had a comedy category in damn near twenty years (something that I have a big issue with), one of the funnier movies of 2016 won best picture at an award show that's on no one's radar. Russell Simmons threw the All Def Movie Awards on February 22 and The Lonely Island's Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping took home what I assume can only be gold painted Beats. The Hollywood Reporter and AV Club reported the story from the show that apparently features obscure categories like Most Out of Place White Person and Bad Ass Boss Chick.

As for the creation of the show itself, Simmons told the Reporter that the reason for its existence is because a lot of people he works with won't have the chance to go to something like the Emmys or Oscars. Simmons added "It's not meant to be that serious; it's highlighting social and political problems within our industry and that's OK. … But it's a fun, exciting thing to do."

Even with such an unknown awards show, the All Def Movie Awards had an A-list guest list with the likes of Tommy Davidson, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, Ice Cube and Amber Rose in attendance. 

The Lonely Island recognized and thanked the awards show for the win in a tweet.

Speaking of Samberg, he made an appearance at the Independent Spirit Awards where he performed the opposite of an In Memoriam segment. Quite literally, it was a piece about famous people where were still alive.

HBO has its own comedy line ups

Not one to be outdone by some streaming service, HBO announced its upcoming standup specials. Jerrod Carmichael, Pete Holmes and TJ Miller are all lined up to play on the premium network. Actually, this will mark Carmichael's second special for HBO as his Love At The Store. This new one is coming next fall. Holmes, having released a couple of hours already on Comedy Central, comes to the network with Faces and Sounds which he taped this past April. His show Crashing also premieres next year on HBO. TJ Miller's Meticulously Ridiculous tapes September 16 in Denver as part of his The Meticulously Ridiculous Tour. The Silicon Valley star's special comes out next year as well.

Those aren't the only comedy offerings the network has. Russell Simmons' All Def Comedy tapes on September 7 at Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles. The show is to be hosted by Tony Rock as he takes the audience through sets of up and coming comedians. And finally, Tracy Ullman's Tracy Ullman Show premieres on Friday, October 28. The six episode sketch series features both famous and regular British people in wacky bits. Think Dame Judy Dench and Angela Merkel, both of whom are slated to appear.
