RIP: "Playing House"

In the worst news to come this week, Playing House has been canceled by the USA network. Stars/creators/writers/producers Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Claire took to Twitter to announce the horrible news.

Playing House is about St. Clair moving in with her best friend, Parham, after the latter has her first child. The show was a hit with a small crowd of viewers. Season three came a year and a half after the first two due to St. Clair's breast cancer diagnosis. The plot for the final season even followed the real life storyline.

The series also starred Keegan-Michael Key, Zach Woods, Brad Morris and Lindsay Sloane

'Playing House' is renewed for a third season! Expletives abound!

I'm going to do something I rarely do in regular news articles but I have to now and that's curse (and write in the first person). USA has given Playing House another season! Holy shit! The Hollywood Reporter announced the news after creators and lead actresses Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Claire crashed the TCA's winter press tour. The series has garnered a fandom that expands from cult status to critical acclaim. The network surprised the world last season as the once on the bubble show was given a second season along with early digital premieres. There's no telling if that will be the case for the upcoming season. If you have yet to watch Playing House, first of all what the heck is your problem; secondly, the series follows St. Claire moving in with best friend Parham as they try to raise the latter's baby. Keegan-Michael Key is there too along with other guest stars. Just stop whatever you're doing and go watch the show.

USA Comes to Senses, Renews 'Playing House' for Second Season

Way to take it down to the wire USA. Just when I was giving up hope, you decide to bring back one of my most beloved new shows of 2014. 

Deadline reports that, six months after its first season run, Playing House has finally been renewed. The network announced earlier this year that they were moving away from the scripted comedy game. Now, Playing House, Benched and Sirens only remain. I guess that goes for Modern Family too. 

Playing House reportedly had only OK ratings on television but did better on demand. So, naturally, USA has decided to move the show to an on demand format. A week before it airs on TV, viewers can catch the show on Xfinity, USA Now and other video on demand places. It looks as though the Netflix model and cable format are coming together into one cohesive, sexy space. 

USA is "Pulling Away" from 'Playing House'

This is why I cry at night. 

One of the funniest new comedy shows this year probably won't be renewed for a second season. Deadline reports that the cable network - that so adamantly wanted to get into the comedy ring - has decided to refocus efforts on its dramas again. 

USA purchased syndication rights for Modern Family way back in 2010. Using that popular show as a lead in, other shows were created to feed off of residual viewers. They had so much faith in the program that they hired a dedicated comedy executive whose soul job I assume to be was to find funny shows.

Getting back into dramas may be due to the fact that FX and sister channel FXX dominated in the cable sitcom arena with newcomers Married and You're The Worst. Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair fans continue to get their hearts crushed.

The network plans to remain committed to its current in development comedies Benched set to premiere on October 28, and Sirens, which was just renewed for a second season.
